| Hungarian Holiday Day 1: Arrive Head to Kecsekemet for an overnight stay. It will depend on your arrival time as to what is possible to see and do in this area, but there are many choices. Day 2: Visit Opusztaszer. According to the legends, the conquering Hungarian tribes decided on the division of accommodation for the tribes near Ópusztaszer. To commemorate this event, the National Historical Memorial Park was established here. The museum houses collections of archaeology, history, art, science and ethnography, but cultural programmes are also held here. You can also find the monumental, romantic circular panorama painting called Magyarok bejövetele (the Hungarian conquest) by Árpád Feszty. The park also presents the nomadic farming of the famous Hungarian grey cattle. Horse shows are held everyday. Day 3: A 1-3 hour horse trail This will be your first day of riding. Our trip starts from Lippicai Farm close to the Bukk National Park. We will ride for as long as it is comfortable for you and at a pace that you choose. Perhaps we will ride up into the hills, perhaps along village roads and paths or maybe to the National Park. Day 4: A sightseeing trip to Eger. Eger has been inhabited since the Stone Age. During the early Middle Ages the area was inhabited by German, Avar, and Slavonic tribes. Hungarians occupied the area in the 10th century. The 14-16th centuries were an age of prosperity for Eger. Wine growing, for which the town is famous, began to be important at that time. During the Turkish occupation of Hungary, Eger became an important border fortress. The 1552 Siege of Eger was a miraculous defence by Hungarian forces in the face of overwhelming odds. Under the command of Captain István Dobó the defenders of the castle (fewer than 2,000 people, including women and children) successfully fought back a Turkish army of 80,000 soldiers. Most Hungarians know the story of the siege from the novel "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon" (Hungarian "Egri csillagok") by the 19th century Hungarian author Gárdonyi Géza. In 1596, a bigger army of the Turks attacked Eger, and took the castle after a short siege. Eger then fell under Turkish rule for 91 years and became the capital of a Turkish vilayet (administrative division). The Turks transformed churches into mosques, rebuilt the castle, and built other structures including public baths and minarets. The Minaret still stands and is northern most minaret of Europe. Tourists often head for the Castle of Eger, the Cathedral, the Minaret, Város a város alatt (literally "City under the city"), Szépasszonyvölgy and Dobo Square. Beside historical sights and its spas, Eger is famous for its wines. In fact, its particularity is that Eger Wine Region has a great potential to produce both high quality white and red wines. Its famous and traditional wines are: Egri Leányka, Egerszóláti Olaszrizling, Debrői Hárslevelű (whites), and Egri Bikavér (red). Included in your Eger day trip is a visit to the well known Gal Tibor wine cellar. Here you will be shown around the cellar, learn about the wine making process and sample 6 wines, usually unavailable to buy anywhere except the cellar. Finally, you will visit the healing waters of Eger Szalok. Admission to the healing waters is included in the total price but further treatments, such as ”healing mud” and massages aren’t. Day 5: Bukk National Park Today we will embark on a journey through the Bukk National park. Transport will be provided to the starting point and we will head to the Bukk Plateau to see the Lippi saner colts grazing freely. Whilst in the park rare birds, flowers and insects, especially butterflies, can be seen. We could also visit the ”Steps” waterfall and the ” cave of the pre historic man” The park has a forest museum which you could also visit. Day 6: A 3-4 hour horse trail. Mount your trusty stead once again for another wonderful trail. Day 7: A trip to Aggtelek Today you will travel through the beautiful landscape, typical of northern Hungary. Winding roads eventually lead to the UNESCO World Heritage sight, Aggtelek. A short tour, apx 1km in length, will allow you to see the amazing formations deep within the ground. Stalactite and stalagmites have been forming here for millions of years. After the cool air of the cave venture into daylight once again and walk along one of the many trails available. If you prefer a private ecology tour with a guide can be arranged, however this in not included in the price. Day 8: A 3-4 hour horseback tour. Your final trip on your new friend. It also has carriage rides and night time shows, as well as folklore shows and gypsy music. This is an extremely popular destination and I would recommend that you take full advantage of the guest house ( there are 3 rooms so early booking is required to avoid disappointment at the Tanya. I have included a nights stay in the total price. Day 10: Depart. Sadly you will depart today. Your final trip will be from the Tanya to Budapest.
