explore, 52 of them highly protected, this really is
a paradise for anyone who enjoys nature.

The history of the limestone range can be traced to the Paleozoic era, when the edge of
today's Carpathian Basin sank and there it was covered by sea for
about 70 million years.

Rock formation was followed by heavy volcanic activities in the Triassic period and several
times again in later periods. The Bukk rose above surroundings about 15 million years ago,
then as a result of continuous weathering, erosion, it has received its present, characteristic
form.

The Bukk plateau is the largest karst plateau in Hungary. Sink-holes, water-holes and Viznyelo
form enchanting karst formations within the landscape and the Bukk plateau offers some of the
best views of the park.

Within the national park there are 26 hectares of land which are home to the 300 year old
Oserdo or Virgin forest. It is made up of beech trees, some standing at 40 meters tall,  and
moss-grown trunks laying on the forest floor are witnesses of old times.

The area also treasures rare species of plants from the last ice age that survived in small
pockets under special ecological conditions. Its variegated flora supports a similarly rich fauna.

Within the National Park are 11 locally and 17 nationally protected nature areas.

Many people visit the Bukk National Park alone and enjoy their trips, however, we truly believe
that to get the most from your short break you should use our guided tours which will allow you
to see the sights that are usually hidden from view and from a safety aspect are much safer.
The Bukk National Park is an enormous park and tourists have been known to lose themselves
and need rescuing! Our guides are also well informed about the fauna and flora too!
